The Black-Dot Method

1. Start at the tip on Gear 1.

Lightest speed. Just touch the very end of the nail for a second or two. 

 

You're not shortening yet, you're flattening the tip so you've got a clean surface to watch. 

 

Hold the paw steady and let your dog feel the buzz without pushing in.

2. Move to Gears 2 to 3 and watch for the chalky ring.
